History of the Carnival of Bogota
Bogota’s Carnival takes place annually on August 5 and August 6.
The event celebrates the anniversary of the Hispanic Foundation.
The celebrations have been taking place since 1539, but they were originally celebrated around the time of Lent.
In 1561, the music of the Ubaque Indians became part of the celebration, which brought a new level of excitement to the festivities.
The present day celebrations can date back to 1916.
In the 1930s, the celebrations ceased to take place because of the alcohol-related crimes.
Although there was an attempt to revive the carnival in the 1960s, the attempts were not successful until 2005.
The people of Colombia wanted to celebrate the music, dancing, art and food of their culture.
