Many people refer to Istanbul as the gateway between the East and West!

Istanbul is the 5th largest metropolitan area in the world, and is the center of many cultural and financial influences.

There are more than 12 million people living in this metropolitan area, which is the largest city in Turkey.

The summers are hot and humid, and the winters can be cold and snowy.

Overall, the temperatures are mild which make the climate very pleasant.

Finding a Home in Istanbul

People living in Istanbul will be pleasantly surprised at the salary that they can earn.

The cost of living in Istanbul is less than in major U.S. cities, so you can get more bang for your buck.

If you are single or married without children, you might enjoy the hustle and bustle of the big city.

However, if you have children, you might want to consider an area outside of the city so your children will have more room to play.

Living close to a mosque will make your neighborhood a little busier.

Prayer services are held throughout the day and can start as early as 5 a.m. and the chanting can be beautiful, but can also be a loud.

Unless you are shipping a car overseas or planning to buy one there, make sure you get an apartment or house near public transportation.

The public transportation in Istanbul makes it very easy to get around.

Being Street Savvy

Like any major city, you have to be aware of your surroundings.

Pick pockets are a concern in Istanbul, along with con artists.

Taxi drivers also take advantage of tourists, so try to learn the ropes from the locals.

Don’t bring large amounts of cash with your and leave valuables at home.

Be careful when crossing streets and walking through busy intersections.

When you are walking, even in crosswalks, know that pedestrians never have the right of way.

Things to do in Istanbul

Food

When you move to Istanbul, you will fall in love with kebabs.

A true Turkish kebab will be cooked over a flame or a grill and there is nothing like it.

You will also have to try Raki, which is an alcoholic beverage made from anise and grapes.

Be careful because Raki is very strong and locals even call it “lion’s milk.”

You will find that fish and seafood are very popular meals.

If you are a big fish fan, visit Anadolu Kavagi, which is a small fishing village on the Asian side of the Bosporus.

You can enjoy some delicious inexpensive seafood at one of the local restaurants.

Shopping

If you are in the mood to find real bargains, check out the Grand Bazaar!

There you will find plenty of gold, silver, clothing, rugs, food and pretty much whatever you need.

There are over 4,000 merchants selling their goods on the covered streets.

Don’t ever pay full price!

Learn the art of bargaining and talk them down in price.

If you are in the mood for finer shopping and entertainment, visit Istiklal Street.

Sightseeing

Topkapi Palace is a very popular tourist destination.

This was a home to the Ottoman sultans for 400 years.

You can see beautiful architecture, gardens, royal clothes, jewels, armors and many other delights.

The Hippodrome is an amazing amphitheatre that can hold 100,000 people.

You can also visit the Egyptian Obelisk, which dates back to 390 A.D.

I didn’t know that Intlmove provided shipping services to Turkey. I toured the Intlmove warehouse and I was pleasantly surprised at their professionalism and the detailed explanation I received from an Intlmove employee.
