One of the most famous historical figures to come out of England was William Shakespeare.
The English poet and playwright was famous for his written works.
Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford upon Avon in England and spent most of his life traveling between his birth city and London.
At only 18 years old, Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway were married and had three children by 1585.
His only son tragically passed away at 11 years old.

Between 1585 and 1592, Shakespeare was an actor and writer in London although there is little record of him during this time.
This time period is also known as Shakespeare’s Lost Years, according to scholars.
He was part owner of the playing company named the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, which later became known as the King’s Men during the reign of King James I.
The troupe bought and performed most of the famous poet’s plays.
They performed at court and other theatres that Shakespeare partially owned, which included the Blackfriars, The Theatre and The Globe.
The Globe actually burnt down during a performance of King Henry VIII.
It was reconstructed and there are many performances of Shakespeare’s plays there today!

Some of his earliest works include Venus and Adonis (1593), The Rape of Lucrece (1594), The Passionate Pilgrim (1599) and the Phoenix and the Turtle (1601).
Most of his sonnets were written in the 1590s.
In 1609, 154 sonnets written by Shakespeare were published by Thomas Thorpe.

In the beginning of his playwriting career, he mainly wrote comedies and histories.
Scholars agree that Shakespeare likely collaborated with other playwrights during his career.
The first recorded works are Richard III and the three parts of Henry VI.
Some of his more famous works include The Comedy of Errors, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Towards the end of his career, he focused on tragedies, which included Macbeth, Hamlet and King Lear.
His last major tragedies written were Antony and Cleopatra and Coriolanus.

During the final stage of his playwriting career, Shakespeare began composing tragicomedies, also known as romances.
Cymbeline, The Winter’s Tale and The Tempest were all from this time period.

Shakespeare passed away on April 23, 1616 and is buried at the chancel of the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford upon Avon.
His surviving works include 38 plays, 154 sonnets and many poems.
His plays have been translated in every major language, so they can be enjoyed worldwide.
Today, his plays are performed more than any other playwrights’ works.

When you move to Englad, you will be able to attend one of many Shakespeare festivals or performances.
Some of the plays and events take place in Stratford and London, which is where Shakespeare spent most of his life.
There are also touring groups throughout the United Kingdom that also perform Shakespeare’s plays.
